Orange (Provence)
Provence (France)
Orange, a town in Provence in southern France, was where the great medieval philosopher, astronomer, mathematician, and biblical commentator Rabbi Levi ben Gershon (Gersonides, the Ralbag, 1288-1344) lived for much of his life. As part of the region under papal and local protection, its Jewish community was spared the general expulsions from the Kingdom of France.
