Fondi
Italy
Fondi is a town in the province of Latina, Lazio, central Italy. As Roman Fundi it lay on the Via Appia, the road to southern Italy begun in 312 BCE. In 1378 Count Onorato I Caetani hosted here the conclave that elected Clement VII, counted by Rome as an antipope, against Urban VI during the Western Schism. The corsair Barbarossa sacked the town in 1534. Tradition holds that Soter, bishop of Rome from about 167 to 174 CE, was born here, in what was then Campania.
