Rossano (Calabria)

Italy

Rossano is a hill town in Calabria, southern Italy, since 2018 part of the municipality of Corigliano-Rossano, province of Cosenza. Under Byzantine rule it took on a strongly Greek character that outlasted the Norman conquest; its tenth-century Oratory of Saint Mark survives, and the Codex Rossanensis, a Greek Gospel book on purple parchment, was found in its cathedral sacristy in 1879. Rossano is an archiepiscopal see: the future Pope Urban VII was its archbishop from 1553 to 1573, and Pope John VII (705-707) was probably a native of the town.
