Portus (Porto, by Rome)
Italy
Portus was the artificial harbour of ancient Rome, at the mouth of the Tiber near the modern village of Porto in Fiumicino, Lazio, Italy. Claudius built its first basin (his inscription there dates to 46 CE) and Trajan added a hexagonal inner harbour in 103 CE. It was Rome's main Tyrrhenian port until silting and the sixth-century Gothic War brought decline. Portus was also an early bishopric, now the suburbicarian diocese of Porto-Santa Rufina, held by a cardinal bishop. Formosus became its bishop in 864, long before his papacy (891-896).
