Santarem
Santarem (Arabic Shantarin), on the Tagus in present-day central Portugal, was a town of the western al-Andalus (the Gharb) under the taifa of Badajoz before its conquest by the Christians in the 12th century. The Maliki hadith scholar and biographer Ibn Abd al-Barr (d. 1071), author of al-Istidhkar and al-Tamhid, served as a judge (qadi) in Santarem and Lisbon under the Aftasids.
