Eaglesfield, Cumberland

Eaglesfield is a small village in the parish of Dean in Cumbria (historically Cumberland), north-west England, about 4 km south-west of Cockermouth and just outside the Lake District National Park. The chemist and physicist John Dalton, a central figure in the development of modern atomic theory, was born here in 1766. The village was also the birthplace of Fletcher Christian, who led the mutiny on HMS Bounty, and probably of Robert de Eglesfield, fourteenth-century founder of The Queen's College, Oxford.
