Hampton Court, Middlesex
Hampton Court lies on the River Thames about 19 km south-west of central London, historically in Middlesex and now in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Its palace was begun in 1514-15 for Cardinal Wolsey, passed to Henry VIII in 1529, and was partly rebuilt by Christopher Wren for William III and Mary II from 1689. From the 1760s the Crown granted rent-free 'grace-and-favour' lodgings there. Michael Faraday spent his last years in such a house, obtained through Prince Albert, and died there on 25 August 1867.
