Uraniborg, Hven

Uraniborg was the observatory and residence Tycho Brahe built on Ven, an island in the Øresund strait between Zealand and Scania that was then Danish and now belongs to Landskrona Municipality, Sweden. Its cornerstone was laid on 8 August 1576, with funding from King Frederick II's government, and Tycho added the ground-level observatory Stjerneborg nearby. Tycho left Ven in 1597 after losing royal support under Christian IV, and Uraniborg was destroyed in 1601, after his death; Sweden occupied the island in 1658.
