Portland, Oregon
Portland, in northwestern Oregon, United States, stands where the Willamette River meets the Columbia and is the seat of Multnomah County. Before settlers arrived along the Oregon Trail, the area was home to two Chinookan bands, the Multnomah and the Clackamas. The town was founded in 1845 and named after Portland, Maine, when its two founders settled the choice by coin toss; it was incorporated in 1851. The chemist Linus Pauling was born here on 28 February 1901, and he later attended the city's Washington High School.
