Richmond, Surrey
Richmond is a town on the River Thames in south-west London, England, now part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It belonged historically to Surrey and was transferred to Greater London in 1965. Once called Shene, it took its name from Richmond Palace, which Henry VII rebuilt and named in 1501 after his earldom of Richmond in Yorkshire. Charles I made Richmond Park a royal deer park in the 1630s, enclosing it in 1637. The mathematician Arthur Cayley was born here on 16 August 1821.
