Siffin

Siffin was a plain on the upper Euphrates in northern Syria, near Raqqa, where in 657 the army of the caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib confronted that of the Syrian governor Mu'awiya in the Battle of Siffin, a pivotal clash of the first Muslim civil war (fitna) that ended in an inconclusive arbitration.
