Sinop

Sinop (classical Sinope), on a promontory of the Black Sea coast of northern Anatolia (modern Turkey), was an old port-city, birthplace in antiquity of the Cynic philosopher Diogenes. In the Islamic period it was a Seljuk and then Ottoman port; the Persian poet and mystic Fakhr al-Din Iraqi (d. 1289), a wandering Sufi, is connected to the Anatolian towns of his travels.
