Termez (Tirmidh)

Termez (medieval Tirmidh), on the Oxus (Amu Darya) in present-day southern Uzbekistan on the Afghan border, was a city of the region of Transoxiana. The hadith master al-Tirmidhi (d. 892), compiler of the Jami' (one of the six canonical Sunni collections), was born and died at Bugh, a village near Termez, and took his nisba from the city.
