Van

Van, in the highlands of eastern Anatolia (modern Turkey) on the shore of Lake Van, was a city of mixed Kurdish, Armenian, and Turkish population. The reformer Said Nursi (d. 1960), author of the Risale-i Nur, spent formative years teaching and studying in the Van region of his native Kurdish southeast before the First World War.
