Dolores (Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato)
Dolores Hidalgo is a city in the north-central part of the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla arrived as its parish priest in 1803, succeeding his brother, and set up workshops for pottery and brickmaking and promoted silk-raising and beekeeping, some of which colonial authorities ordered stopped. On 16 September 1810, at the parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, he called his parishioners to rise in revolt, the Grito de Dolores that began Mexico's independence struggle. The town was later renamed in his honour.
