New Echota (Georgia)
New Echota, in present-day Gordon County in northwest Georgia, was named the capital of the Cherokee Nation on 12 November 1825. The first issue of the Cherokee Phoenix, in English and Sequoyah's Cherokee syllabary, appeared here on 21 February 1828. The Treaty of New Echota, signed here in December 1835 by a minority faction, was rejected by Principal Chief John Ross and the national council but enforced by the United States. In 1838 the forced removal of the Cherokee, the Trail of Tears, began from an army holding camp here.
