Tahlequah (Oklahoma)

Tahlequah, in the Ozark foothills in northeastern Oklahoma, United States, is the seat of Cherokee County and the capital of both the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. After the forced removal of the Cherokee from the Southeast, it was designated a capital in 1839, and the national government had moved there by mid-1840. John Ross remained Principal Chief until his death in 1866. The Cherokee National Capitol, built on the town square in 1869, housed the nation's government until it was dissolved in 1906.
