Xinzhou (modern Xinxing, Guangdong)

Xinzhou, in the Lingnan region of southern China, corresponds roughly to modern Xinxing County in Yunfu, western Guangdong, where a county was first set up under the Sui dynasty in 607 CE. The Platform Sutra introduces Huineng (traditionally 638-713), the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, as a commoner from Xinzhou, and tradition holds that he died at the Guoen Temple in his home county. Modern historians regard much of his traditional biography as legend that took shape in the century after his death.
