Yerevan (Erivan)
Yerevan (Ottoman Erivan/Revan), the capital of present-day Armenia, was in the early modern period a fortress-city contested between the Ottomans and Safavid Persia. The Ottoman polymath Katib Celebi (Haji Khalifa, d. 1657) took part in the Ottoman campaign that captured Erivan in 1635, an event reflected in his geographical and historical writings.
