Zabid
Zabid, on the Tihama coastal plain of western Yemen, was a major centre of Islamic learning, especially of Shafi'i law and the Arabic sciences, with a celebrated cluster of mosques and madrasas; it was founded in the early 9th century. The lexicographer and hadith scholar al-Murtada al-Zabidi (d. 1791), author of the dictionary Taj al-Arus, took his nisba from the town.
