Mind-Benders of Jewish History
The Rambam and Genghis Khan shared the same world
When the Rambam passed away in Egypt in 1204, a Mongol chieftain named Temujin was uniting the tribes of the steppe a continent away. Just two years later he took the title by which the world would remember him: Genghis Khan.
How we know
Rambam (Maimonides) 1138–1204, died December 1204 in Fustat, Egypt. Temujin was proclaimed Genghis Khan at the kurultai of 1206; born c.1162. Their lifetimes overlapped by roughly 40 years.
