Mind-Benders of Jewish History
Vikings reached America while Rabbeinu Gershom still taught
Norse sailors were felling timber in Newfoundland in the year 1021, the first Europeans known to stand in the Americas, nearly five centuries before Columbus. In that very year Rabbeinu Gershom, the Light of the Exile, was still alive and leading his academy in Mainz, shaping the takanot that guide Ashkenazi Jewry to this day.
How we know
A 2021 Nature study dated Norse wood at L'Anse aux Meadows precisely to 1021 CE, counting tree rings from the 993 CE solar-storm radiocarbon spike. Rabbeinu Gershom lived c.960–1028 and was active in 1021. Columbus 1492 − 1021 = 471 years.
