Mind-Benders of Jewish History
We are further from Rashi than Rashi was from the Talmud
Rashi (d. 1105), whose commentary is printed beside nearly every page of the Talmud, lived closer in time to the sealing of that Talmud around the year 500 than we now live to Rashi. His link to the age of its editors was shorter than our link to him.
How we know
Rashi d.1105 (graph). Babylonian Talmud sealed c.500 CE. Rashi->Talmud-close = 1105-500 = 605 yrs. Today 2026 -> Rashi = 921 yrs. 921 > 605.
