Deborah was a prophetess and the only woman among the Judges of Israel, who led the nation during a period of Canaanite oppression. Sitting beneath her palm tree in the hills of Ephraim, she rendered judgment and summoned Barak to battle; her victory over the general Sisera is immortalized in the Song of Deborah (Judges 5), one of the oldest poems in the Bible. She is remembered as a rare figure uniting prophecy, leadership, and judgeship, and as a model of faith-filled courage.
