Philip II of Macedon

Philip II became king of Macedon in 359 BCE and transformed a weak frontier kingdom into the dominant power of Greece. He reformed the army around the pike-armed phalanx and used both diplomacy and warfare to bring the Greek city-states under Macedonian leadership, sealed by his victory at Chaeronea in 338 BCE. He was assassinated in 336 BCE, leaving to his son Alexander a seasoned army and a unified base from which the conquest of Persia was launched.
