Shemayah was a leading sage of the fourth zug (pairing generation) of the Second Temple period, active in Jerusalem around the first century BCE. He served as nasi (president) over the court, with Abtalion as av bet din (head of the court), with whom he formed one of the most influential pairs in early Rabbinic tradition. Shemayah was known for his ethical teachings and his emphasis on the proper conduct of judicial affairs. He lived during a turbulent period of Jewish political history and is remembered in Talmudic tradition as a teacher of profound wisdom regarding both legal matters and character development. His relationship with his colleague Abtalion exemplified the collaborative leadership of the Sanhedrin during this era.
