Shushtar (Tustar)
Shushtar (medieval Tustar), in the Khuzestan region of southwestern Iran, was a town noted for its ancient hydraulic engineering works on the Karun river. It gave its nisba (al-Tustari) to scholars including the early Sufi Sahl al-Tustari (d. 896); the mystic al-Hallaj (executed 922) spent part of his early life in the region of Tustar.
