Montaup / Mount Hope (Bristol, Rhode Island)

Montaup, called Mount Hope by the English, is a hill in Bristol, Rhode Island, United States, overlooking Mount Hope Bay. It was the site of a Wampanoag (Pokanoket) village and the base of the sachem Metacomet (King Philip), sachem from 1662; a rock outcrop called King Philip's Seat is remembered as his meeting place. The war named after him began nearby in 1675, and he was killed in a swamp near the hill in August 1676. In 2024 Brown University gave 255 acres here to a Pokanoket-run preservation trust.
