Metacomet (King Philip)

Metacomet, called King Philip by the English, was a Wampanoag sachem and the son of Massasoit. As colonial expansion and pressure on Wampanoag land and sovereignty mounted, he led an alliance of Native peoples against the New England colonies in the conflict of 1675-1676 that became known as King Philip's War. In proportion to population it was among the most destructive wars in early American history. His death in 1676 broke the alliance and ended large-scale Native resistance in southern New England.
