Sowams (Warren, Rhode Island)
Sowams was a Pokanoket (Wampanoag) village in what is now Warren, Rhode Island, United States, and the home of the sachem Massasoit, also called Ousamequin, who governed more than 60 settlements in the region. He made a peace treaty with Plymouth Colony on 22 March 1621, and the Plymouth settlers Edward Winslow and Stephen Hopkins first visited Sowams that July. In 1675, at the start of King Philip's War, the English settlement that had grown up at Sowams was destroyed. Warren, the later town on the site, was the first home of Brown University, founded in 1764.
