Massasoit (Ousamequin)
1581 CE–1661 CE · Wampanoag homeland
Ousamequin, honored by the title Massasoit ('great sachem'), led the Wampanoag confederacy of Pokanoket in what is now southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In 1621 he entered into a treaty of mutual protection with the Plymouth colonists and shared a harvest gathering later remembered as the 'first Thanksgiving.' The alliance he maintained kept a fragile peace between the Wampanoag and the English for some forty years, until his death around 1661.
