Agastya

Agastya

c. 1300 BCE · Tirunelveli

Legendary Vedic seer; no historical dates exist. He is credited with several Rigvedic hymns and is celebrated as the sage who carried Vedic culture south of the Vindhyas. The date is a conventional Rigvedic-stratum placement; historicity is uncertain.

Agastya is a legendary seer credited with hymns of the Rigveda (notably in Mandala 1, roughly RV 1.165–1.191) and revered across both Sanskrit and Tamil traditions as the sage who spread Vedic learning into the south. Myths describe him drinking the ocean and humbling the Vindhya mountains, and pair him with his wife, the rishika Lopāmudrā (to whom the dialogue hymn RV 1.179 is attributed, alongside Agastya and a pupil). In Tamil tradition he is honoured as a founder of Tamil grammar, with an ashram traditionally placed in the Pothigai hills near Tirunelveli. He is a figure of scripture and legend rather than history.
