Lopāmudrā
c. 1300 BCE · Tirunelveli
Legendary Rigvedic woman seer (rishikā) credited with hymn 1.179 of the Rigveda and remembered as the wife of Agastya. No historical dates exist; the date is a Rigvedic-stratum convention and historicity is uncertain.
Lopāmudrā is a legendary woman seer (rishikā) of the Rigveda, traditionally credited as a composer of hymn RV 1.179 (Mandala 1), a dialogue with her husband, the sage Agastya. She is honored in later Śākta and Śrī Vidyā tradition as well. Like the other early rishikās, she is known through scripture and legend rather than historical record.
