Chandragupta Maurya

Chandragupta Maurya (reigned c. 321-297 BCE) was the founder of the Maurya Empire, the first state to unify most of the Indian subcontinent under a single ruler. Guided by his adviser Chanakya (Kautilya), he overthrew the Nanda dynasty of Magadha and established his capital at Pataliputra. He fought the forces of Seleucus I, a successor of Alexander, and concluded a treaty that gained him territory in the northwest. Later tradition holds that he abdicated in favor of his son and adopted Jain asceticism at the end of his life.
