Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon)

Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon)

182 BCE116 BCE · Ptolemaic-Roman

Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II was a Ptolemaic king whose long and violent reign epitomised the dynastic strife of the later Ptolemies: civil war with his sister-wife Cleopatra II, purges of the intellectuals of Alexandria, and a tangle of co-rule arrangements with the royal women. The hostile nickname 'Physcon' ('Potbelly') by which he is sometimes known comes from his enemies.
