Mithridates I (reigned c. 171–132 BCE) was the Arsacid king who transformed Parthia from a minor Iranian kingdom into a great Near Eastern power. He conquered Media and then Mesopotamia, wresting Babylonia from the declining Seleucids, and took the grand title 'Great King.' His conquests laid the territorial foundation of the Parthian Empire, which would rival Rome for nearly three centuries.
