Ezana of Aksum
?–360 CE · Aksum
Ezana ruled the Kingdom of Aksum, in the highlands of present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea, in the 4th century. Tutored by the Christian Frumentius, he adopted Christianity and made Aksum one of the earliest states to embrace the faith, replacing the traditional crescent-and-disc emblem on his coinage with the cross. His inscriptions and coins document his campaigns and the kingdom's role in Red Sea trade. His conversion established the Christian tradition that has endured in the Ethiopian highlands ever since.
