Emperor Gaozu of Han (Liu Bang)
256 BCE–195 BCE · Chang'an (Xi'an)
Emperor Gaozu, born Liu Bang, rose from a minor local official of commoner background to become a leader in the revolt against the Qin. After the Qin collapse he prevailed over his rival Xiang Yu in the Chu-Han contention, and in 202 BCE founded the Han dynasty with its capital at Chang'an. He eased the harsh Qin laws and heavy taxes, enfeoffed kinsmen and allies, and set the pattern for a dynasty that, with one interruption, endured about four centuries.
