Hatarat Nedarim (Annulment of Vows)

hah-tah-RAHT neh-dah-REEM

A Jewish ceremony that releases you from promises you made but may have forgotten or can no longer keep.

Imagine you once promised to do something—perhaps give money to charity, fast on a certain day, or avoid eating something—but life changed, or you simply forgot you made the promise. Jewish tradition recognizes that people sometimes make vows they can't fulfill or didn't fully intend. Hatarat Nedarim, performed just before the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashanah), is a formal release from those forgotten or impossible vows.

The practice draws from biblical law: the book of Numbers describes how vows can be annulled by a court or authority figure. Medieval Jewish scholars developed this into a structured ceremony, still performed today. You stand before a court of three (ideally learned people, though in modern practice almost anyone can serve) and declare that any vows you made are hereby cancelled—freeing yourself to enter the new year unburdened. A related but distinct text, Kol Nidre ('all vows'), is chanted on the eve of Yom Kippur — but where Hatarat Nedarim releases vows already made, Kol Nidre is a declaration pre-emptively nullifying vows one may come to make in the year ahead.

The idea isn't to encourage careless promise-making. Rather, it's a safety valve: recognition that human beings sometimes overcommit, forget what they've promised, or face circumstances they couldn't foresee. It's less about dodging responsibility and more about not carrying the spiritual weight of impossible or forgotten obligations into a year of judgment and renewal.
