A Tanna of the Yavneh generation (late 1st century CE), renowned for his humility. At the request of Rabban Gamliel II he composed the Birkat HaMinim, the blessing concerning heretics added to the daily Amidah. The Talmud records that the sages eulogized him as 'humble and pious, a disciple of Hillel.'
