Arei Miklat (Cities of Refuge)
Safe cities where someone who killed by accident could escape revenge and get a fair trial.
In ancient Israel, if you accidentally killed someone, the victim's family had the right to hunt you down and kill you in revenge—a practice called blood vengeance. But the Torah wanted to protect people from *unfair* revenge, so it created six special 'cities of refuge' scattered across the land. If you reached one of these cities before the avenger caught you, you were safe. Once there, your case would be heard by judges who would decide: was it truly an accident, or did you mean to do it? If they ruled it was accidental, you could stay in the city—protected but confined—until the High Priest died. When he died, you were free to go home without fear.
Think of these cities as ancient Israel's answer to the tension between family justice (blood revenge) and legal justice (fair trial). They acknowledge that killing happens, sometimes without malice, and that raw vengeance without investigation can lead to endless cycles of violence. The system tried to balance the family's grief and right to accountability with the killer's right to live if their deed was truly unintentional.
