Beinoni (The Intermediate Person — Tanya's Ideal)

The Tanya's central type of person — one who never sins in deed, word, or thought, yet lives in constant inner struggle.

Most spiritual heroes are saints who have conquered every desire. The great thinker S.Z of Liadi, in his magnum opus the Tanya, the foundational book of Chabad, holds up a different and more reachable hero: not the saint who has conquered all desire, but the beinoni — the "in-between" person who still feels every pull toward wrong, yet never lets it govern a single deed, word, or even consciously entertained thought. The beinoni is presented as a goal anyone can reach: not feeling no struggle, but winning it, moment by moment.
