Korban (Sacrificial Offering, generic)
A gift brought to the Temple to draw closer to God, repair a broken relationship, or celebrate.
In ancient Jewish life, when someone wanted to honor God, seek forgiveness, or give thanks, they brought an animal—a cow, sheep, goat, or bird—to the Temple. This wasn't punishment or destruction for its own sake; it was a ritual gift. The animal was offered on the altar, and parts of it were burned while other parts were eaten by the priests or the person who brought it. Think of it as a solemn meal shared between the human, the priests, and God—a way of saying 'I acknowledge you, I'm sorry, I'm grateful' through an act that involved your own resources and attention.
Different situations called for different offerings. If you had sinned carelessly, you brought one kind. If you'd wronged someone and made restitution, you brought another. On festivals, the whole community brought offerings together. Over time, as Jewish practice evolved and the Temple was destroyed, these rituals stopped being performed, but the memory of them stayed alive in prayer, study, and mystical imagination. Kabbalists and other Jewish thinkers began to see these offerings not just as historical practices, but as spiritual blueprints—ways of understanding how human intention, ritual action, and divine response work together.
