Chatat (Sin Offering)
An animal sacrifice brought in Temple times to repair a person's standing before God after an unintentional violation of a serious prohibition.
In ancient Israel, when someone unknowingly violated a major prohibition—eating forbidden foods by mistake, or breaking a sacred oath without realizing it—they brought a special animal sacrifice called a chatat, or sin offering. Unlike sacrifices that expressed gratitude or celebrated an occasion, this one was specifically about repair: it acknowledged the unintentional wrong and restored the person's relationship with God and the community.
What distinguished the chatat from other sacrifices was the precision of its performance. The animal (usually a goat or sheep, with variations based on the offerer's status) was slaughtered in a specific place, its blood was applied to the altar's corners in a prescribed pattern, certain parts were burned, and the priest consumed the remainder. The Talmud and later legal authorities discussed these details at length, working out which transgressions required a chatat, who was obligated to bring one, and what happened if an error was made in the offering itself.
After the Temple's destruction, the chatat ceased as a practical institution. Jewish thinkers reflected on what it had represented—the process of acknowledging a wrong, making a concrete gesture of repair, and having one's standing genuinely restored—and these ideas informed the ongoing development of teshuvah (repentance) as a religious concept.
