Kriat Shema (Recitation of Shema)
A twice-daily Jewish prayer that declares God's absolute oneness, woven into morning and evening worship.
Kriat Shema (pronounced 'kree-aht SHEH-mah') is Judaism's central declaration of faith. The word 'Shema' means 'hear,' and the prayer begins with the most famous line in Jewish tradition: 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is One.' Jews recite this passage in the morning and evening as a covenant practice—a moment to pause and affirm their deepest conviction about reality: that ultimate unity and oneness underlies everything.
Think of it as Judaism's spiritual anchor. Just as a sailor checks their compass regularly to stay oriented, a Jewish person recites Shema to stay aligned with their core understanding of God and reality. The practice comes directly from the Torah (the Hebrew Bible), making it one of Judaism's oldest and most fundamental observances. Over centuries, Jewish mystics developed rich teachings about what happens spiritually during Shema—not just as words spoken aloud, but as an act of mystical unification and alignment with divine reality.
Two attestations
For prayers composed of pre-existing text, the words and the practice of recitation enter the tradition at different moments. Both are canonical.
