Kriat Shema Al HaMita (Bedtime Shema)
The 'Bedtime Shema' — a sequence (Shema, Hashkiveinu, and Psalms) recited before sleep. The Arizal added extensive kavanot to it because sleep is a 'sixtieth of death' (Berakhot 57b) and the soul ascends nightly to be judged.
The nightly recitation of the Shema and accompanying blessings, psalms (especially Psalm 91 and Psalm 3), and protective prayers before sleep — understood simultaneously as fulfilling the Torah obligation to recite Shema at night (Deut. 6:7, "u-veshokh'bkha") and as invoking divine protection against nocturnal harm. The practice is Talmudic in root but received its fixed extended liturgical form only in the Geonic period, with further Kabbalistic elaboration in 16th-century Safed. Rav Amram's siddur, sent to the Jewish communities of Spain c. 856–860 CE, carried this extended rite westward and established it as the pan-communal standard. Kabbalistic additions — especially Tefillat HaShekhevu and kavvanot for the Shema's four paragraphs — were elaborated by the Ari's circle in 16th-century Safed and transmitted via Chaim Vital's Pri Etz Chaim (Sha'ar Kriat Shema she-al ha-Mita, gate 16), enriching the rite in Sephardic and Hasidic communities in particular.
Two attestations
For prayers composed of pre-existing text, the words and the practice of recitation enter the tradition at different moments. Both are canonical.
