Ardashir I
180 CE–242 CE · Ctesiphon
Ardashir I (died c. 242 CE) founded the Sasanian Empire, overthrowing the last Parthian king Artabanus IV at the Battle of Hormozdgan in 224 CE and taking the title 'King of Kings.' Rising from the province of Persis, he centralized royal authority and promoted Zoroastrianism as the empire's guiding faith. The dynasty he founded ruled Iran for over four centuries and consciously modeled itself on the earlier Achaemenids.
