Liu Bei

Liu Bei (161-223 CE) was a warlord of the late Eastern Han period who founded the state of Shu Han and declared himself emperor in 221, claiming descent from the Han imperial house. Rising from humble origins, he built his power in alliance with strategists and generals during the wars that ended the Han dynasty, eventually establishing his base in the region of Sichuan. He died in 223 after a failed campaign against the rival state of Wu, and later became a central, heavily romanticized figure in the fourteenth-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
