Sun Quan
182 CE–252 CE · Nanjing
Sun Quan (182-252 CE) was the founding emperor of Eastern Wu, one of the three states that emerged from the collapse of the Han dynasty. He inherited control of the lower Yangtze region as a young man after the deaths of his father and elder brother, and consolidated his rule there for the rest of his life, formally declaring himself emperor in 229. His long reign secured southern China as an independent power during the Three Kingdoms period, though his final years were troubled by disputes over the succession.
