Clovis I
466 CE–511 CE · Paris
Clovis I became king of the Salian Franks around 481 and united the various Frankish groups under his rule, founding the Merovingian dynasty. He overcame the last Roman authority in Gaul and rival kingdoms to forge the realm that would become France. His conversion to Catholic (Nicene) Christianity, traditionally dated to around 496–508, aligned the Frankish monarchy with the Church and set it apart from its Arian neighbors. He died in 511, and the kingdom was divided among his sons.
